of September. Therewas, indeed, in the document an absence of emphasis uponthe subject of the German repertory; but to that the publicwere accustomed. The prospectus called attention to theproposed production of two American works (an opera, Shanewis, and a ballet, The Dance in Place Congo, byHenry F. Gilbert) and also of Liszts oratorio St. Eliza-beth, which was to be given in the form of an opera inEnglish; but mention was made of the retention of a stage-manager for the German repertory, all the familiar Germannames appeared in the list of singers and the list of operascontained all those of Wagner which had been strong propsof the repertory for many years. Ten days before the opening of the season of 1917-18the directors made it known to the public that there wouldbe no German performances. This decision had not beenarrived at hastily, but after ample discussion prompted bya study of public opinion. When the fact was announcedin the newspapers of November 2, 1917, it was given out
